Nestled in around one of the more prominent corners of shoplots, Penang Recipe would immediately catch one’s attention with its colourful exterior. Upon closer inspection, this café and restaurant is more than just a pretty face. Serving hawker styled Penang fare, Penang Recipe brings some of the best kept secrets on Penang to city folks in KL.
Fanny Goh, Director of Penang Recipe is a Penangite herself and it is easy to see where see gets the idea for her dishes. “Some are my own recipe while some I modified and try to perfect the taste,” said Goh.
Among their signature dish is the Assam Curry Fish. What’s special about this dish is that it is cooked with a traditional Penang recipe, which means that no santan is used in the curry. This gives the dish a sour, appetizing flavour thanks to the use of assam. To fully enjoy this dish, it comes with a side of Mantous and a crispy biscuit that is dipped into the curry. Goh said that the biscuit is made especially for the dish as the sweetness of the crispy biscuit contrasts with the sourness of the curry well.

Not scrimping on the details, their Seafood Char Kuey Teow is among the more lavish and extravagant char kuey teows around. While looking like normal hawker fare char kuey teow, the Seafood Char Kuey Teow is topped off with crab meat, prawns, cockels, and squid among others. Filled with so many bounties from the ocean, you can have the kitchen to prepare your Seafood Char Kuey Teow extra spicy for an extra kick.

One dish that had everyone baffled was the Famous Fried Rice. The thing with this fried rice is nobody knows what is in it. Nevertheless, the rice was moist and most importantly not too oily. While attempts to dig out the secret ingredients were futile, Goh let slipped that the rice is fried with fruit juices. Regardless of which, the Famous Fried Rice is among one of the more unique dish at Penang Recipe.

No trip to Penang would be complete without asam laksa. Same goes for Penang Recipe. Their Assam Laksa albeit being a bit on the safe side, captured the essence of asam laksa; sour soup base with a hint of fish and prawn paste.

While looking relatively harmless, the Muachi at Penang Recipe is a little undiscovered gem. Coming in Cocunut, Watermelon and Orange varients, the flavoured Muachis captures the taste of each ingredient. The Coconut Muachi was creamy while the Watermelon Muachi was fresh and sweet.

For drinks, one would not go wrong with the Nutmeg Juice, a quirky serving of nutmeg in a glass.
