Tantalising Korean Dishes @ Onix Jun Korean Restaurant
Ambience
Ambience

Onix Jun Korean Restaurant has been operating in Ipoh for close to a year now, moving to this new premise from the old location within the vicinity of Medan Ipoh Baru, in Ipoh Garden East of Ipoh, Perak.

'Hair down, shoes off, and enjoy your meal ....'

The restaurant is run by a family of Koreans residing in Ipoh, and slowly but surely, gaining momentum in terms of popularity and patronage. On weekend nights, the place may be crowded, hence waiting for a seat may be the norm if you're here during the peak hours. As for language barriers, no fret as the owner (she's a lady chef by the name of Kim Kwang Sook) and her family speak English and Mandarin, probably owing to the years they've lived in Malaysia.

'The Korean dailies are available for the reading pleasure of the Korean community/tourists in Ipoh, or for those ambitious enough to try'

Onix Jun serves a variety of Korean dishes, from the evergreen Ginseng Chicken soup, to Barbecued Beef and Pork, as well as Kimchi Soup and Korean pancakes.

Slightly off the Korean cuisine track, one can even sample their version of maki sushi, and even pork chops, on those days when you feel peckish, and kimchi's the least favourable dish on your mind.

The Ban Chan or side dishes served at Onix Jun vary periodically, but a fixed number of options (all six plates of them) are being served each time we frequent the place. The Kim Chi (Korean pickled Chinese cabbage) at Onix Jun managed to impress, not too sour nor spicy, but maintains the balance perfectly, a tantalising treat to the jaded palate, in anticipation for more good things to come. All the side dishes are refillable, hence do not feel bashful but instead, ask for constant refills for your favourite side dish.

BBQ Pork

If you're one who's shunning BBQ restaurants for fear of smoky atmosphere, or walking out of the place with your hair smelling like an ashtray, Onix Jun assures that you won't have to put up with all that. The process of grilling and smoking the meat is done in the kitchen, so you can be assured of a clean, fuss-free meal with piping hot dishes served to you. The slices of half fat-half lean pork are meant to be wrapped in the Romaine lettuces, and smothered with the accompanying Korean hot sauce (gochujang), and dipped slightly into the sesame oil condiment. The combined flavours of fresh greens and smoked meat is delicious, to say the least.

Ginseng Chicken Stew

One of Korea's most popular dish, aside from the perennial favourite Kim Chi, is the Korean Ginseng Chicken Stew. A hearty soup-like concoction with free-range chicken being used, ensuring lean, and tender meat, with various herbs and glutinous rice, the stew is more than enough to be shared amongst three diners. The faint hint of ginseng ensures no overpowering taste some might detests, and the ample portion of chicken and glutinous rice makes this stew a rather filling one.

The bowl of Korean cold noodles came in a very large portion, definitely meant to shared. With crunchy julienned cucumbers, chopped red chillies, pickled radish and half a boiled egg, the springy, buckwheat noodles is served with lots of gochujang (red chilli paste), and even ice cubes to maintain the cold temperature of the noodles. Resembling Japanese cold soba in more ways than one, the dish can be had as an appetizer, a main, or even as "dessert" in some outlets. Korean cold noodles

By far, Ipoh has only two Korean restaurants that I know of. The other restaurant leans towards grilling and barbecuing, while Onix Jun emphasizes more on traditional and authentic Korean dishes. An outlet not to be missed, if you're a Korean food lover, and happens to be in Ipoh.
